Chapel Trail

The Chapel Trail is a side path off of the Little Horse Trail. Little Horse Trail is the official starting point but this trail may also be accessed from the Chapel of the Holy Cross parking area. The trail follows the base of Twin Buttes to the Chapel of the Holy Cross., considered one of Sedona’s power sites. The Chapel, built amidst the red rocks of Twin Buttes, was inspired by a Frank Lloyd Wright design. Completed in 1956, the Sedona landmark rises dramatically from the butte, yet integrates the landscape. At the chapel there is a public observation deck, highlighting the gorgeous red rock buttes, eroded spires, and surrounding terrain.

Cathedral Rock Trail from 179

Cathedral Rock Trail
from 179

More of a rock climb than a hike, this trail is unshaded and steep and difficult in places. Follow the basket cairns across the wash and up the moderate slope toward the spires. At .25 mile, the trail emerges on a broad ledge with nice views. Then, it ascends steeply over bald rock and in a shallow cleft with a few toeholds notched into the rock to help on the steeper places.

Emerging on a small knob, cairns show the way up and across several ledges toward the deep drainage ahead which it follows, climbing moderately steeply to the top of a wide saddle between two spires. Great views all along, but quite spectacular from the top. An unmaintained path leads south along the west base of the spires giving access, with short climbs, to two more saddles between sheer rock faces and a close-up view of an exposed lava dike at the first. Return by the same route for a 1.5 mile hike. Hot is summer.

Casner Mountain Trail

Casner Mountain Trail

Originally built to maintain power lines, Casner Mountain trail offers spectacular views of the Sycamore Canyon and Red Rock/Secret Mountain Wildernesses and the Verde Valley. The trail follows an old jeep road which still provides access to the power lines.

The trail begins in high desert vegetation and switchbacks up the side of Casner Mountain. Once on top of the mesa, Pinyon/Juniper with open grasslands are the norm. The ascent is very strenuous and accounts for about 2 miles of the total length. However, once on top the hike is really quite easy to moderate. Take lots of water especially during the Summer months.Wildlife is abundant, particularly in the winter months. Watch for elk and deer. An occasional bear and even mountain lion are spotted. (Trail may be taken 2 miles further. Simply follows power lines along the ridge connecting Mooney Trail and Buck Ridge.)

Hogs Trail

Hogs Trail One of the most underrated areas in Sedona is Munds Wilderness. Many people in the past would take on this area because the predominant trail for this area, Broken Arrow, is adjacent to a heavily traveled jeep road. A new day has arrived…while you still must hike a portion of Broken Arrow to get to Hogs, the trail departs from the … [Read More...]
