Mitten Ridge

Mitten Ridge is a long band of weathered, jagged red rock formations forming the north walll of Bear Wallow Canyon. The terra cotta sandstone cliffs are sculpted into fantastic shapes with columns, caves, overhangs, and buttes. The trail follows the contours along the base of Mitten Ridge, offering close-ups views of the scenic canyon and its awesome formations.

Merry-Go-Round Rock Trail

Merry-Go-Round
Rock Trail

Merry-Go-Round Rock is the distinctive circular formation at the head of Bear Wallow Canyon. The formation has short columns capped with erosion-reisistant grey limestone. This unique carousel-shaped band illustrates the encroachment from an ancient sea, sandwiched between eroded layers of red sandstone. This hike circles Merry-Go-Round Rock above the prominent limestone ledge, overlooking the red sandstone cliffs. Spectacular views extend west down Bear Wallow Canyon toward Sedona. The ledge was originally part of historic Munds Wagon Trail.

Marg’s Draw Trail

The Hike House Sedona Trail Rating System
Marg’s Draw Trail

This scenic trail can be hiked from the Broken Arrow Trailhead (as described here), from the Sombart Lane trailhead, or from Schnebly Hill. From Broken Arrow, it begins by crossing the wash just north of the parking area and enters Wilderness. Shade is soon left behind and nice red rock views open up as the trail winds its way north across a nearly flat expanse dotted with juniper, pinyon pine and Arizona cypress. The trail crosses the draw by a scenic dry waterfall at the .75 mile point.

Nearing one mile, a half-mile long spur trail comes in on the left from the trail access at the end of Sombart Lane. Continue ahead. Soon, Uptown Sedona, Capitol Butte, Wilson Mountain and Steamboat Rock come into view. At 1.25 miles, the trail curves around the base of Camel Head and there is a good view of that formation and of Snoopy Rock above and to the right. The trail leaves Wilderness, crosses Schnebly Hill Road, and goes east about .8 mile before ending at a large parking turnout. Return by the same route or hike one way with arranged transportation. The hike can be extended to the north using Huckaby Trail and to the south using Broken Arrow Trail.

Loy Canyon

Loy Canyon

(Note: Easy trail for first 3/4 but turns diffiicult at the switchbacks as you head up to Secret Mountain.) This easy to hike trail leads up a desert wilderness canyon offering excellent views not only at trail’s end, but all along the way as well. The wide, well constructed path was used by the Samuel Loy family on the 1880’s to move their livestock to and from summer pastures on the rim. The trail starts out by skirting the fence line of the Hancock Ranch. Sheer cliffs of vermilion and buff sandstone form a colorful backdrop for the desert garden of manzanita, catclaw, cholla and prickly pear that carpets the canyon floor. Natural rock sculptures carved by flash floods and spring runoff that seasonally course down this normally dry streambed provide scenic settings for lunch stops along the way. If there’s been a recent rain the sculpture may include a picturesque reflecting pool or a natural bathtub for a cool dip on a hot day. Underground moisture is sufficient year-round to support a desert riparian area rich in bird and other animal life.

Near the end of the canyon, the trail completes the majority of the 1680 foot climb to a high saddle that leads to the top of a mesa called Secret Mountain. Here you can continue along the Secret Mountain Trail for more spectacular overlooks or catch your breath for the return trip and a different perspective on all that you’ve passed through on the hike up.

Hogs Trail

Hogs Trail One of the most underrated areas in Sedona is Munds Wilderness. Many people in the past would take on this area because the predominant trail for this area, Broken Arrow, is adjacent to a heavily traveled jeep road. A new day has arrived…while you still must hike a portion of Broken Arrow to get to Hogs, the trail departs from the … [Read More...]
