Girdner Trail

The Hike House Sedona Trail Rating System
Girdner Trail

The trail may be hiked one-way with arranged transportation and would be rated moderate. The route north from the Cultural Park Trailhead to the Dry Creek Road Trailhead is described here. The trail begins near the ramada and interpretive signs and descends gradually to the north, then northwest, with good views. At 1 mile, it begins a moderate descent to the west, bends north and enters the Dry Creek drainage. After two crossings of the drainage, the trail meets the gas pipeline access road (closed to motor vehicles) at 1.5 miles. It follows the road for about 1/8 mile, then branches north and rejoins Dry Creek which it follows for the next 1.2 miles. This portion of the trail involves crossing the normally dry creek many times in a rather narrow, shallow canyon and should not be hiked following heavy rain.

The trail intersects the Rupp Trail branching uphill to the left following an old roadbed at 2.8 miles. Cross the creek and follow the same road (closed) as it climbs out of the drainage to the northeast and circles to the southeast for 1/4 mile. Here at the road blockage, the trail forks left and climbs moderately to the crest of a ridge with nice views of the mountains to the north. It now descends to the east toward Capitol Butte. At 3.5 miles, the Arizona Cypress trail branches left. Continue east for 1/8 mile and after crossing a wash the second time, bear left at the intersection with the Two Fence Trail (not shown on map) which goes right. The trail climbs moderately, tops out, then descends to the east and levels out. As it approaches Dry Creek Road, the trail bears right and parallels the road a short way and ends at the signed trailhead about 50 feet north of the intersection with unpaved FS 152.

Fay Canyon Trail

Fay Canyon Trail

Most people come to Fay Canyon to see the natural arch that’s located just under a mile up the trail. But those who don’t know about it usually walk right past it. Though the Fay Canyon Arch is by no means small, it looks so much like an ordinary rock overhang it’s easy to glance right at it and not realize what you’ve seen. If you keep watching the rock wall to the north (right) side of the trail sooner or later you’ll spot it. Then the short, steep trail up to the arch can be a little hard to locate too.

After you’ve found the arch you may want to continue on up the trail. This small, hidden canyon supports a diverse community of desert plants and provides good views of the surrounding cliffs. The trail follows an old jeep track which eventually turns into a footpath. It dead ends at a red Supai sandstone cliff where you can see evidence of some ancient Indian dwellings and marvel at the breathtaking scenery that surrounds you.

Dry Creek Trail

Dry Creek Trail

The Dry Creek Trail follows the headwaters of Dry Creek in the Red Rock-Secret Mountain Wilderness. The creek flows south down the canyon and meanders through Dry Creek Basin, eventually joining Oak Creek west of Red Rock State Park. This trail begins at the head of the basin and follows the creek upstream deep into the canyon, crossing the creek several times. The canyon is shaded with Arizona cypress, alligator juniper, Douglas fir, and ponderosa pine, with lush vegetation and small grottos. When Dry Creek is running high, the trail is not recommended. An alternative hike is to head up Bear Sign Canyon, which branches off to the northwest.

Dogie Trail

The Dogie Trail offers hikers and horsebackers a chance to experience one of Arizona’s spectacular views without all of the crowds. If solitude is what you seek, this could be the trail for you. The trail descends into the heart of the Sycamore Canyon Wilderness. For those who long for rugged beauty unspoiled and untamed by man, Sycamore is one of the few paces in the southwest that can lay claim to such a lack of man’s accomplishments. The trail into this primitive area begins at a saddle 200 yards from where you should park your vehicle. Expect a panoramic view of the canyon from this pass.Javelina, deer, quail, and numerous other animals call this country home. Pinyon pine, juniper, Arizona cypress, brush fields and wildflowers are abundant.Make sure you take lots of water for this hike especially during late spring to early fall months. Temperatures quite often exceed 110 degrees in the canyon bottom.

Hogs Trail

Wednesday, May 18, 2016 1 Comment

Hogs Trail One of the most underrated areas in Sedona is Munds Wilderness. Many people in the past would take on this area because the predominant trail for this area, Broken Arrow, is adjacent to a heavily traveled jeep road. A new day has arrived…while you still must hike a portion of Broken Arrow to get to Hogs, the trail departs from the … [Read More...]
